K Laxma Goud
2003, Etching, 75 x 56 cm, Edition 10 of 10K Laxma Goud’s mastery in printmaking and use of lines is visible in this etching of a rural landscape where he combines his expertise in depicting nature and the human figure. The pair of vertical trees and their uprightness is offset by the angularity of the female figure in motion. A similar configuration is mimicked by the branches of the smaller shrubs and plants. In a striking pose of a danseuse, the female figure resonates with the quintessential sculptural forms of women represented across Indian art, with a narrow waist and voluptuous breasts. The richness of the sari covered in floral vines, the blouse with geometric insertions and detailed ornamentation, is not lost despite the work’s monochromatic appearance. Set in a quiet rural landscape, one can imagine the tinkling sound of anklets accompanying the dancer across the forest floor.
