K Laxma Goud

Drypoint on paper, Edition 1 of 10

K Laxma Goud has achieved mastery over a variety of media, but what is common to his artistic practice is his strong lines. This work is an example of drypoint etching, which is an intaglio print technique where the artist has used a sharp stylus to etch lines directly on the metal plate without the use of any acid. Here, the profile etching of a woman is reminiscent of line drawings. His preoccupation with eroticism and sexuality is reflected in the exposed breasts, which peek out from her overtly printed or embroidered dress. Drawing from ancient Indian sculptures, the woman is adorned and has an elaborate coiffure. She has a squarish, geometric face, and it seems as if the artist has frozen a frame from a dramatic movement. While the work appears to be stiff, it is imbibed with a vivacious energy and individual appeal.
