A Console Table

Anglo-Indian

India, Height: 97 cm, Width: 120 cm, Depth: 65 cm

The heavily ornamented console table, crafted from a sturdy reddish-brown wood characterises the cultural synthesis that defines Anglo-Indian furniture. Resting on four cabriole legs, the table features a polished top with visible wood grains and is supported by a densely carved raised back and aprons. Covered in swirling veins, leaves and flowers, this table with floriate embellishments celebrates superior craftsmanship.

Sprouting from each leg is the head of a stylised lion with a gaping mouth. Sweeping outwards from its mouth is a long leaf offsetting its sharpened teeth. To balance the lion heads, smaller heads of a mythical creature have been added towards the bottom. The table’s stability is further ensured by the sinuously carved stretcher connecting each leg.
